What is Work-Life Balancing
In globalization, achieving work-life balance is the most crucial factor in harmonizing work and personal life.
To achieve a productive and balanced life, mental well-being, and job
satisfaction, various efforts have to be made to achieve this balance through
global HRM, which is influenced by various cultural, political, economic, and
technological influences.
🌟Various studies have shown that if the work-life balance is in good
condition, employees in that organization perform their tasks very efficiently
and with less stress. Similarly, employee satisfaction increases and employee
turnover is very low.
(Jeffrey Greenhaus, Nicholas J. Beutell, 1985)
The above facts show that human resource management has been entrusted with the important responsibility of maintaining a high work-life balance in this global context.
Let's see what the challenges are to this work-life balance.
✍Cultural Behavior
In some countries, employees won’t be able to step
away from the work as they are dedicated
& have overtime culture
(Japan / South Korea)
✍Technology Development
With today's technological advancements, even a mobile phone in hand can
be used to access corporate systems or communication channels (email/video
conferencing). So, due to the ability of employees to work from anywhere,
technology has also created an imbalance in the work-life balance.
✍Global Targets
The common goals or targets of multinational companies require employees
to work outside of corporate working hours.
✍ Workplace Policies
Some countries have laws in place to prevent people from working after
office hours, but the lack of such laws in other countries can lead to an
imbalance in the work-life balance of employees living in countries without
such laws.
Due to the above, it is necessary to initiate very serious activities,
from the formulation of laws to organizational HRM, to maintain a balanced
work-life balance.
Let's see what steps can be taken to avoid the above and create a high
work-life balance organizationally.
✍Implementing Flexible Working Hours
Among various countries, Finland, Portugal, and Sweden have very attractive, flexible working hours and have the necessary basic laws in place.
For example, in Portugal, companies can’t contact employees outside of
their working hours, even if they are working remotely.
✍Implementing Labor Rules
Can introduce policies that regulate working hours
✍Implement Technology Regulations
Enact legislation to stop employees from connecting outside of office
hours.
✍Corporate Initiatives
Multinational companies should adopt culturally adaptive work-life
balance programs & introduce remote or hybrid work models.
Work-life balance is a very important aspect of the modern world. Some
countries already have advanced policies to support this work-life balance in a
political or legal way. However, in some countries, the necessary arrangements
for this work-life balance are being made economically, politically, and
legally. And they are struggling with equal work without any start.
Institutions help create work-life balance around the world through a
collaborative approach between individuals/governments.
